Tivey takes the tradition of vocalist / trumpeter (Chet Baker, Louis Armstrong) into an indie rock realm, reminiscent of combined Jeff Buckley’s vocals and later Miles Davis’s trumpet. As with current artists Hozier, St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear, and Dirty Projectors, jazz roots fall gently aside to reveal an authentic songwriting sound committed to paving new pathways. Backward EP achieves a mesmerizing and diverse patchwork of rock, indie-folk, and soul influences, conjuring melodies and hooks of memorable yet off-kilter simplicity. The live group consists of him on trumpet/voice, plus electric bass, electric guitar, and drums.

With slide blues guitar, gospel organ chords, New Orleans-style horns, and group harmonies, bluesy roots-rockers Buffalo Stack can’t help but recall Woodstock heroes the Band. In fact, it was at Levon Helm’s barn in Woodstock where the members originally met, forming Buffalo Stack, who at their hardest hitting and blues-rockingest recall Black Keys or White Stripes.
