Ithaca, NY-based intelligent dance music powerhouse Big Mean Sound Machine is proud to announce their 2017 fall tour, continuing the celebration of their new, fan-funded album Runnin’ for the Ghost and teaming up with the Campaign for New York Health to build support for the New York Health Act, a bill in the state legislature which would guarantee health care to all New York state residents regardless of age, wealth, place of employment, or immigration status.

From the band:

“Since its inception, one of the core values of Big Mean Sound Machine has been to bring people and communities together in celebration and healing through music and dance. In these wild times, we feel it is important for musicians and artists to stand up for our creative communities. After reading this bill and reflecting on the state of healthcare in this country, especially compared to that of other first world nations, we feel it imperative that people be made aware of how healthcare reform could truly benefit everybody; and what better place to start than in the beautiful state of New York which we proudly call home. The New York Health Act has passed the state assembly the past three years in a row and is one state senate co-sponsor short of majority support. We are actually very close to making universal health care a reality in New York and we hope that the feelings of community, compassion, solidarity and freedom generated at our live shows can spill over to help raise awareness of what a equitable and more affordable health care system that benefits all of us could look like.”

Currently, over a million New Yorkers have no health insurance, including some of your favorite artists and musicians. Millions more residents are underinsured and unable to afford unexpected medical costs. The New York Health Act will provide universal, comprehensive health care coverage and billions of dollars in savings for New York families, businesses, and local governments. All New Yorkers would be covered for all medically necessary services, including: primary, preventive, specialists, hospital, mental health, reproductive health care, dental, vision, prescription drug, and medical supply costs. The care provided under New York Health would be more comprehensive than plans offered by health insurance companies today. There would be no out-of-pocket costs as barriers to health care.

A detailed study of the New York Health Act, conducted by Professor Gerald Friedman of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, showed tens of billions in savings by streamlining the administration of our healthcare system to a single-payer funding stream[1]. Most of the savings is found in eliminating insurance company administrative cost and profits, and slashing the enormous administrative costs health care providers spend to deal with insurance companies. Another significant area of savings is due to negotiating better prices for drugs with the pharmaceutical companies; and for medical devices with their manufacturers.

Information about the NY Health Act and how individuals can get involved will be available at all New York shows and a portion of each show’s proceeds will go towards the Campaign for New York Health, a statewide coalition dedicated to passing and implementing legislation for universal health care in New York State who believes that healthcare is a human right that should be accessible to all of us, not just those who can afford to pay.
